We started the hike from the fortress carpark. I believe it is only open outside the busy summer times of June and October. In summer you would have to park in the town and walk up.
The trail follows the valley up and down along the river.
There are a number of amazing Cascades along the way.
Just before you reach the Las Negras Cascade you take a turn to the left and follow the trail up the mountain. The trail zigzags a bit before reaching the small mountain hut. From there it is a straight shot upto the lake.
We didn't make it all the way to the lake as there was to much snow and ice on the path.
Return the same way you came.
We made a detour out an back to the waterfall. It is well worth it.
